Rush Hour Guides — Wenzels
At Wenzel’s, also known as “orange London Greggs”, breakfast, lunch-on-the-go or even breaks in a particularly unsociable shift becomes a surprisingly restorative experience due to their hot food offerings. You can even order online at https://www.wenzels.co.uk/order-online/. They also do 2Good2Go which will save your work-financial-life balance quite a bit
Wenzel’s provides a range of hot sandwiches, wraps, and paninis that are perfect for a quick lunch or a hearty snack. Their offerings include choices like grilled chicken and bacon, sausage and egg, or falafel wraps, each prepared with a combination of fresh ingredients and flavorful sauces. The hot paninis, “pressed to perfection”, offer varieties such as tuna melt, chicken and pesto, and mozzarella with tomato and basil. Baguette Pizza? Don’t get me started. This shouldn’t taste so good. The relentless barrage of savoury tastes should wear you down. The edge of saturated-fat bound aromatics should stop you from finishing the whole thing. It doesn’t tho.
Wenzel’s commitment to quality extends to their savoury pastries as well. Their selection of hot pies, such as the classic steak and kidney or vegetable and cheese, offer a warm and satisfying option for those who seek comfort food. The steak bake is very tender, but not too much and is very well paired with its pastry. The sausage rolls follow a common Wenzels theme in seeming more flavoursome in the filling than greggs, definitely a greater distribution of flavour on the sausage end, though the pastry is generally decent.
For those with a penchant for international flavours, Wenzel’s has options like the Spicy Chicken Wrap, inspired by global cuisines and filled with tender chicken, crunchy veggies, and zesty sauces. This highlights the bakery’s versatility in catering to a range of taste preferences. The samosas are properly spicy which provides a very useful breaker to a pastry based meal. On that note the chicken tikka bake really captures those smoky notes whilst remaining a surprisingly light choice. The chicken bake is pretty much exactly what you’d expect. The cheese and onion bakes are best eaten warm, but well outshone by far by their cheese and vegetable bake that blows your expectations out of the water. The Jamaican-style meat-free pasty is an interesting choice, crossing the line from acquired taste to straight out contagious! BBQ-esque breadfruity mycoprotein with caramelised onions in a well baked coating make this a refined feeling and practical option. The meat counterpart, though more simplistic in flavour, does not disappoint. Neither does their moist, well-packed, full-pastried, rendition of a classic Cornish Pasty.
Complementing their hot food options, Wenzel’s offers a variety of hot beverages, including coffee, tea, and hot chocolate, as well as cold water and juice, which can be paired perfectly with their food offerings. Or just get a Monster energy drink that also works
