Silver Cross, Whitehall
Taking an inevitable foray into chains, this Greene King institution serves a surprisingly satisfying smorgasboard of options both classic and contempory.
Summed up succinctly by my friend as a “wierd pub”, the Silver Cross, from a pub line dating back 224 years, offers a pleasant novelty in its options whilst providing a value for money unexpected so close to the nerve center of London. Their wooden furnishings, stylish lighting on classic decor, and potentially cozy settings contribute to a warm and welcoming atmosphere, inviting patrons to relax, unwind, and soak in the historic surroundings.
For the typical inner city dilettante, the hummus is a must try that we’ll mention first; and Silver Cross delivers with a assertively seasoned hummus and topping, served with a variety of breads (including gluten free options!) ranging from toast to a pitta that informed opinion rates as surprisingly moreish. Perhaps most exotic by displacement from the institution’s culinary origin would be the chicken karaage which they serve highly sauced without compromising on the crispness and well crisped without compromising on the succulence, accompanied by chillies well picked for their cutting but restrained heat. A more discerning consumer would have some interest in the meat-free nuggets which deliver the classic flavour you would expect whilst very much keeping the side up on consistency and texture. They come with a pleasant hot sauce that does soar above the mediocre expectations associated with caucasian culture. Other favourates available as a mix and share include halloumi, chorizo and spicy avocado-based options. To add to the appeal, three mix and share dishes can be combined for about the cost of one main dish!
The mains are not slacking either. Whilst the batter of the fish and chips isn’t quite gold standard, it is far from discordant enough to obscure the delicate and delicious fishy aroma within. All well fried to an authentic British level of crispness and flavour-conductivity. On that note of showing good form in UK culinary standards, you can get what is by all opinion a proper pie here with a more restrained mash and what is in retail standards a good gravy. They also serve the excellent Beyond Burger, accompanying all their many burger options with seasoned fries and all the toppings. The Sunday Roast comes in chicken, beef and nut with roasties, Yorkshire pudding, seasoned greens, roasted carrots, cauliflower cheese; while their multi-tiered buffet includes bruschetta and cajun skewers. All in all, we have a surprisingly diverse menu to appease multiple appetites with a sophistication indeed exceeding expectations from the longtime corporate sibling of the Hungry Horse!
As for drinks, a heavily bodied house red that reminds you of your childhood house parties will put you in a jovial mood whilst it guides you through this impressive list of spins on pub classics. When it comes to libations, Greene King pubs in Whitehall uphold the brewery’s reputation for quality beers and ales. Visitors can enjoy a wide selection of traditional cask ales, craft beers, and other beverages, catering to various tastes and preferences. Whether you’re a fan of award-winning hoppy IPAs, smooth bitters, or rich stouts, these pubs offer a range of options to satisfy beer connoisseurs and casual drinkers alike. So the beer is decent too and yes, there are also desserts.
